Irritable
Bowl Syndrome (IBS)
Irritable Bowel Syndrome often develops
in people between the ages of 20 and 30
and is twice as common in women as in
men. The cause of irritable bowel syndrome
is unknown but may result from abnormal
contractions of the muscles in the intestinal
walls. An increased sensitivity to certain
foods such as fruit, spicy food and fat
may contribute.
Stress, anxiety and depression are associated
with IBS and can make symptoms worse.
Symptoms include:
Abdominal
bloating combined with excessive
quantities of wind.
Abdominal
pain, often on the lower left
side, this may be relieved
by defecation or passing of
wind.
Diarrhoea
Feeling
the bowel has not been emptied
Nausea
and vomiting
Feeling
of fullness and difficulty
finishing meals

How
can Reflexology help IBS?
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is an
uncomfortable and sometimes embarrassing
syndrome. It is a combination of intermittent
abdominal pain, constipation and or diarrhoea.
Reflexology aims to reduce stress, anxiety
and tension and encourage the release
of any blockages in the body’s natural
energy pathway.
A treatment will be tailored to relax
and calm the digestive system which will
help the body to reduce inflammation and
mucous in the gut. Special attention will
be applied to the digestive and lymphatic
system to stimulate the release of toxins
and impurities from the body. A course
of reflexology will return the body to
its natural state of balance and in turn
reduce the unpleasant side effects of
IBS. Advice about foods that can harm
and help during IBS can be offered during
the course of reflexology.
